Paving in Surrey

Choose paving from the ground up, not the sample alone.

The slab or block is only the visible layer. A durable paved area depends on what it carries, the ground beneath it, the designed build-up, falls, drainage and edge restraint. Photograph thresholds, wet areas and the route materials must take through the property.

Purpose first

A path, patio and driveway need different specifications

Foot traffic, furniture, bins and vehicles create different loads. State how the area will be used, including occasional access by delivery or maintenance vehicles. The designer can then assess excavation, sub-base, bedding and edge restraint for that use.

Show interfaces with the house, steps, lawns, drains and adjoining surfaces. Finished levels and falls should be deliberate; they should not block ventilation openings or send runoff towards buildings.

Groundworks

Ask what the price assumes below the paving

There is no universal build-up for every Surrey garden. Existing ground, drainage, loading, paving format and manufacturer requirements all influence the design. A quote should distinguish excavation, disposal, separation, sub-base, bedding, jointing and edge work.

If existing paving has moved or sunk, record where and when it happens. Replacing only the surface without understanding the failure can reproduce the same problem.

Material choice

Compare appearance with care, grip and repairability

Porcelain, natural stone, concrete products and clay pavers vary in texture, porosity, dimensional consistency and installation requirements. View representative samples in realistic light and ask how the surface behaves when wet.

Maintenance expectations matter too. Discuss cleaning, sealing where relevant, replacement availability, joint care and how isolated damage could be repaired. A premium sample does not compensate for unsuitable detailing or preparation.

Water and permission

Front-garden paving needs an explicit drainage plan

Government guidance for householders says that paving more than five square metres of a front garden is permitted development only where the surface is permeable or runoff is directed to a permeable area within the property. An impermeable surface without that provision generally needs planning permission.

That national rule is only one check. Dropped kerbs, listed buildings, conservation areas, drainage assets and local conditions may also matter. Verify the address and proposal with the relevant authority before work starts.

Before anyone prices the work

Questions worth settling early.

Which paving material is best for a Surrey garden?

There is no single best material. Choose around use, appearance, wet grip, maintenance, budget, product quality and the installer’s proposed system for that site.

Why does paving sink?

Possible causes include inadequate or poorly compacted preparation, local ground movement, water, weak edges or a build-up unsuited to the load. The cause needs assessing before a repair is specified.

Should paving drain into the garden?

The drainage design is site-specific, but runoff should be managed deliberately and should not be directed towards buildings, neighbouring land or the highway without an appropriate solution.

What photographs help with a paving enquiry?

Send wide views, close-ups of failures, thresholds and drainage points, plus the access route from the road. Include approximate dimensions and note where water stands.
